Why Make Sauteed Apples
I know my timing with sharing an apple recipe couldn’t be better! Apples don’t look well right now…At least the organic ones. I can literally see where the very hungry caterpillar went in and out.
Yet, here I am, a month or so late to the apple party with one of the tastiest, easiest healthy apple recipes. And I say better late than never.
Maybe you see these sauteed apples next year when apples come back and take over the world again. The point is when you do get those little hands on apples again – try this if you’re looking for an easy healthy apple dessert without a ton of calories. You know, when you need something sweet, but aren’t in the mood to make pie or crumble or whatever. Just make this.
Also sorry that I called your hands little. You probably have huge hands. At least I do. Well, not huge, but I know the witch from Hansel and Gretel would be living off of the pinky finger for a week. Ah, right: APPLES!
Sauteed Apples Ingredients
Apples. Choose the sweetest, best apples you can find. Or just use whatever apples you have at home and look like they’re shrinking from being too old. I’m not going to pretend I know which sorts of apples are the sweetest. I have no idea. I’ve heard of Golden Delicious or Granny Smith, but can’t tell you anything about them. Just have a taste and make sure the apples are not sour like I learned to do here.
Cinnamon. I am currently obsessed with cinnamon and I’ve decided to use it in anything I can. I even bought apple cinnamon tea and love it. Also cinnamon + apples = gold. You’re welcome for the math lesson.
Vanilla. Vanilla does well in cooked apples as well! Surprise!
Nutmeg. That’s optional, but I loved it in this apple recipe!
Coconut oil and a bit of water. That’s to help the sauteeing process. You really don’t need a ton and if you can’t have coconut oil – you can use butter as well if you can and want to have that.
Maple syrup and a pinch of salt. Maple syrup is optional, I actually didn’t add any, but if the apples aren’t sweet – it can help. A pinch of salt is a must to help all the tasty flavors to come out!
How To Make Sauteed Apples
This low-calorie healthy apple dessert comes together in no time! Here’s what you’ll do:
- Peel, core and chop the apples into bite-sized pieces.
- Add them to a nonstick pan with some coconut oil, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and a little splash of water and stir together to coat. Cover the pan and cook at medium-high heat for one minute.
- Then take the lid off and keep stirring occasionally for another 3-4 minutes or until some of the apples become golden brown.
- Take out and serve immediately.
How To Serve
You can easily elevate these healthy cinnamon apples by adding a scoop of ice cream on top. Make that vanilla ice cream. Greek yogurt or dairy-free yogurt might be a good option as well.
You can also top the sauteed apples with some toasted pecans or other toasted nuts. You’ll love the sweetness of the apples and the nuttiness and crunchiness of the nuts! Wow, I truly have my way of describing food. I hate it.
Another thing you can do besides just eating the cooked apples out of the skillet with a fork (NOT what I did, no) is to have them for a warm breakfast. You’ll discover it’s actually perfect for the cold months! Serve warm with some oats and nuts on top and dairy-free milk…It’s so good and comforting!
Can You Store The Sauteed Apples?
Yes! These sauteed apples are great for meal prep too! If you have any extra, place them into an airtight container, close the lid and put in the fridge. The apples will stay good for about 3 days.
I highly recommend reheating either on the stove with a bit of water, in the oven or in that toxic incubator called “the microwave”.
